Class Discussion (02/08): Street Art
4:21 PM
Last Wednesday, we discussed street art in class. We mentioned artists such as JR and Banksy, and watched Exit Through the Gift Shop, too. After our class discussion about street art, I reflected upon my experiences with it.
Back on O'ahu, we have a neighborhood called Kaka'ako. It is one of my favorite places on O'ahu: it showcases a lot of local (and international) street art -- something many people consider "untraditional art", or perhaps not even art at all. In fact, the area has so much street art that some even refer to it as the "Street Art Capital of Hawai'i." Here are a few examples:

Most of the street art found in Kaka'ako is approved by Pow Wow Hawaii as well as the city. Pow Wow Hawaii is an organization and movement founded in 2011 that allows street artists to showcase their talents all the while preventing graffiti and tagging. They hold a weeklong street art festival every year to do exactly that, and new art is painted onto the walls of buildings in the area during each festival. The incredible street art in the area not only has deterred people from tagging buildings, but it has also brought businesses and events to the area (e.g. Eat the Street, Honolulu Night Market, etc.). Although some people may still have their qualms about street art, the vibrant, vivid art has done nothing but improve Kaka'ako.
